Tempranillo (Temp-ra-nee-yo)

Total Production: 2000 Bottles

Australian allocation: 1650 Bottles

The most famous red variety that originated in Spain. Literally translated as ‘early ripe’ because it is the first red grape to reach maturity amongst all red grapes in Spain.

In Catalonia though, we name it ‘Ull de Llebre’, which translates to ‘Eye of a wild Rabbit’

Most famously planted to 100% of Ribera del Duero where the Vega Sicila or Pingus is made (the most recognised wines in Spain).

Growing wise, it is known as ‘lazy’ because it tends to produce a lot of canes and a woody canopy with only a few grapes

The grapes produce fruit driven wines with medium tannins.  It can be made young or as a reserve wine, as a young wine it’s very similar to Beaujolais in France

Usually in Catalonia it’s blended with Merlot or Grenache, so this Tempranillo from old vines near Tarragona is one of the very unique 100% Tempranillos in Catalonia

Our Ull de Llebre is made very traditionally, fermented on skins and then pressed to clay and neutral old oak for maturation

It has savoury aromatics of dried herbs and cured meat.  On the palate, lovely mature tannins combine nicely with the earthy notes that the clay lends to the making process.  Drink chilled with Pain con Tomate and Jamon Iberico

No fining or filtration. Spontaneous wild fermentation. Contains no added sulphites.

8*Everyone hates Tempranillo in Catalonia because it is a ‘Spanish grape’
